I in this article I address the question: Why is my cat panting. Panting in dogs is a fairly regular sight. But panting in cats it often indicates that something is wrong. Commonly, panting is due to heat, anxiety, exercise or dehydration. But it is important to evaluate what could be causing the panting and remove it. If the suspected source is removed and your cat is still panting, the cat should be taken to the vet immediately. One of friend asked : Why is my cat panting. And I helped him and decided to write post about cat panting.
Why is my cat panting??
Cats pant for various reasons. Here are list of common reason of cat panting.
- Cats do pant after exercise as a way to cool down.
- They might also spread themselves on a cool floor and sweat through the pads of their feet. If your cat is panting after exercise, give it a few minutes to relax. The panting should stop.
- If it does not and your cat shows signs of strain when breathing, this demands medical attention.
- Vets do, however, say that exercising with cats and kittens until the point of panting is fine, provided you allow them to then rest.
- In fact, many cat owners do this daily to encourage fitness and reduce excess energy in house cats. This works especially well with kittens.
Panting in a cat looks very similar to a dog. The cat will have its tongue hanging out. And will be breathing in quick bouts. A cat may also stretch its head and neck out to attempt to improve breathing. The panting may be accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, hiding, coughing, loss of appetite, blue or purple gums or strained breathing. Dr Tracy Dewhirst says that if your cat’s tongue is a blue hue instead of pink, this is a major cause for concern.
What cat panting indicate?
If a cat is panting, it indicates that there is a problem somewhere in the body. If heat, anxiety and dehydration have been eliminated as possible causes. There are several things which might be happening to your cat. Here are a few examples:
Disorder of the respiratory system
The organs responsible for breathing may be not be working correctly, leading the cat to panting for more oxygen. This could be a blockage in the nose, throat or lungs. Fluid in the lungs would also cause problems with breathing. Asthma and diaphragm hernias are also possibilities.
heart failure or heart-worm disease compromises gaseous exchange, leading to problems with breathing.
Your cat could be suffering from Anemia which can cause shortness of breath, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Nervous system dysfunctions
If the brain has been damaged due to injury, is being pressured by a tumor or suffers from a genetic dysfunction. This can affect respiratory function. The brain controls all systems in the body. And when its functionality is compromised, several problems can arise.
Panting with labored breathing should be taken seriously. And cats should be taken to the vet immediately. There, the vet will conduct various tests and checks, such as blood tests, X-rays, urine tests and ultrasounds. This is to fully examine all possible causes of the panting such as diabetes, fluid in cavities, head trauma or anemia. Failing to find anything, your vet will investigate the thyroid levels of your cat, remove tissue, fluid or air from the lungs and check for heart problems such as heart worm disease.
The good news is that these diseases can be treated if detected. Taking your cat to the vet as soon as possible can very like save its life. Once a cat has been released from the veterinary clinic, owners should try to make the cat comfortable. Keep the environment stress-free, and administer the necessary medication as prescribed. While the medication will begin to treat the cat, the cat will not be fully healed yet. And will need to preserve energy to get better.

It may be the upper respiratory tract like nasal blockages and growths in nose or pharynx. In lower respiratory tract, the problems may include the inadequate exchange of the gases, asthma or pulmonary edema. Disease of chest cavity may include air, fluid and masses in chest cavity, and diaphragmatic hernias.
The diseases of nervous system will affect respiratory center. There are some of these that may involve the head trauma, the brain tumors, and dysfunction of respiratory muscles.
